Emergency handling of broken radiator hoses on truck cranes
After years of use, truck-mounted cranes are prone to radiator aging. The engine radiator hoses also age and crack easily, allowing water to enter the radiator. If a hose breaks while the crane is in motion, the hot water will spray out as large plumes of steam from under the hood. In this situation, immediately stop the crane in a safe location and take emergency measures to resolve the issue.
Generally, when water enters the radiator, the hose joint is most likely to crack and leak. In this case, cut off the damaged section with scissors, then reinsert the hose into the radiator inlet joint and secure it with wire. If the crack is in the middle of the hose, you can wrap the leak with electrical tape. Before wrapping, clean the hose and allow the leaking area to dry. Wrap the tape tightly around the leak, as the water pressure inside the hose is high when the engine is running. If you don't have electrical tape, you can wrap plastic sheeting around the crack and then cut strips of old cloth and wrap them around the hose. Sometimes, even after wrapping the hose tightly, leaks may still occur due to a large tear. In this case, the crane's water tank cap can be opened to reduce the pressure in the water passages and minimize leakage. After taking these measures, the crane's engine speed should not be too high, and it should be driven in a high gear as much as possible. While driving, pay attention to the water temperature gauge. If the water temperature is found to be too high, stop the crane to cool it down or add coolant.
