Why are aerial work platforms difficult to start in winter?

This depends not only on their technical condition but also on the ambient temperature. Starting is more difficult in winter at low temperatures, primarily for the following reasons:

(1) The cold winter climate and low ambient temperature increase the viscosity of the engine oil, increasing frictional resistance among moving parts, reducing the starting speed and making starting difficult.

(2) Battery capacity decreases as temperature drops, further reducing the starting speed.

(3) Due to the reduced starting speed, compressed air leakage increases, increasing heat dissipation from the cylinder walls. This significantly reduces the temperature and pressure of the air at the end of compression, increasing the delay in diesel ignition and, in severe cases, even preventing combustion.

(4) Diesel oil viscosity increases at low temperatures, reducing the injection velocity. Combined with the relatively low swirl velocity, temperature, and pressure of the air at the end of compression, the atomization quality of the diesel injected into the cylinder is poor, making it difficult for the diesel to quickly form a good combustible gas with the air and ignite in a timely manner. Ignition may even be impossible, leading to starting difficulties.
